Thane Municipal Corporation, Thane Smart City Ltd. and ICLEI South Asia are implementing a project on ‘Accelerating climate action through the promotion of Urban Low Emission Development Strategies (Urban-LEDS II)’ in Thane with support from the UN Habitat and funded by European Commission. This project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support implementation of climate actions at local level by the promotion of Urban Low Emission Development Strategies (Urban LEDS) in cities/towns of emerging economies (Brazil, Colombia, India, Indonesia and South Africa) and Least Developed Countries (Bangladesh, Lao PDR and Rwanda).
Under this project a pilot scale implementation has been proposed to enhance the resilience of the city by adopting an IoT based early warning system for water logging/flooding in Thane. A feasibility assessment has been conducted and six (6) key sites for water level sensors and one (1) site for automatic weather monitoring stations has been finalized. The Radar and Ultrasonic water level sensors operating on solar PVs are installed on major water bodies including Thane creek and Ulhas river estuary. The selection of sites is based on the analysis of climatic parameters, historic extreme weather events of water logging, runoff, catchment, plans and projects of TMC etc. This pilot scale initiative will be assessed further and is planned to generate early warnings for concerned TMC officials to take necessary actions during short duration high intensity rainfall coinciding with high tide levels ...
